Deborah Olayemi Photo

Meet Deborah Olayemi, a first-generation immigrant from Nigeria. Her journey to the United States with her family at the age of eight was filled with hopes for a better life and future. However, the change in environment took a toll on her mental well-being and her skin, causing irritation, acne breakouts, and scarring ( hyperpigmentation). Despite numerous attempts with over-the-counter products, she found no relief for her sensitive skin. This led to a prolonged battle with low self-esteem and anxiety that persisted into her adult years.

Deborah's journey as a registered nurse for the last decade has been marked by a consistent focus on her patients' well-being, influenced by their lifestyle choices and exposure to toxins. This experience inspired her to create nature-driven products, initially for herself and her daughter, who also had sensitive acne-prone skin. After numerous trials and errors, she was determined to perfect the formula before making it available to the public. This determination led her to collaborate with a team of skincare experts to craft a comprehensive collection of plant-based products, including locally produced Shea butter from West Africa, into what is now DeVi's Naturals.

What are your goals for DeVi's Naturals?

Beyond skincare, our community needs more education about skin health and the dangers of not prioritizing skin checks. With the rising skin cancer mortality rates in underserved communities, we need more initiatives to educate about preventive care and provide access to doctors who can diagnose these cancers and treat them at their early stages. I am working on a comprehensive beginner-friendly skin guide that provides non-medical insight into the skin, covering topics such as understanding your skin type, creating a personalized skincare routine, and identifying common skin issues. One of my goals is to connect with local clinics and non-profit community organizations to develop wellness programs catering to underserved communities. Another goal is to offer safer alternative skincare products globally for anyone with sensitive skin like mine. The need for skin health education is urgent, and I am committed to addressing it.
